Graduation and Grading

Tango is different from other dances.  Tango is not about learning and repeating a few steps.   It is not a dance that you can learn or understand in a few lessons.  It is a dance of creative expression.   Learning Tango is more like learning a martial art, or sport, where practiced technique is the most important learning.  Then it is is overlaid with understanding and responding to the complex musical genre, followed by the "language" of Tango, as two people communicate in an unspoken conversation.

As a result, Tango requires commitment, practice and learning over an extended time.  In recognition of this we have developed a method for grading, rewarding and recognising the steps to become a real milonguera and milonguero.

We have decided to reward your Tango journey with an annual grading and graduation ceremony.  Our initial grading system includes five belts (fajas), each representing a stage of your tango growth.  Each grade, awarded at the end of each year, signifies your progress and standard, easily recognisable by other Tango dancers.  Graduation is awarded on attendance, dance skills, dance etiquette, musicality, musicality and musical knowledge, and the feeling for Tango.

Of course, you can stop at any time.  Your achievement will always be signified by your own faja that is yours forever.

We have chosen, for grading the Argentine "faja", a traditional Argentine woven belt, originally worn by indigenous women, and later adopted by gauchos, the cowboys of the Pampas.  They contribute to strengthening core muscles, improved stability and balance and promoting overall strength and fitness.

Fajas contribute to mental well-being by boosting self-confidence. The tight wrapping creates a protective sensation and brings calm to the nervous system, fostering comfort and confidence in one's body. This heightened self-assurance positively impacts mental health and overall happiness.

Beyond their physical functionality, fajas hold a deeper significance, symbolising a connection to one's heritage, cultural identity, and personal choices.

The use of red-coloured fajas is believed to repel negative energies and powers. This practice is rooted in the notion that these vibrant fajas not only shield individuals from external influences but also fortify their inner strength, providing a sense of grounding and balance.
